Subject: [Recruiter] — Offer Discussion Hi [Recruiter Name], Thank you so much for the offer — I'm genuinely excited about joining [Company] and contributing to [specific team/project]. After reviewing the compensation package and researching market rates for [Role] in [Location] using Levels.fyi, I'd like to discuss a base salary of $[Target], which aligns with the 65th-75th percentile for this role and experience level. I'm very enthusiastic about this opportunity and confident we can find a package that works for both sides. I'm also open to discussing a signing bonus or equity adjustment if base salary flexibility is limited. Looking forward to our conversation. Best regards, [Your Name]

10 Negotiation Truths

Companies EXPECT you to negotiate. They build a 10-20% buffer into every offer.

Never accept the first offer on the spot. Always say 'I'd like 24-48 hours to review.'

Negotiate TOTAL compensation, not just base: signing bonus, equity, remote work, PTO, learning budget.

Use specific numbers from your research. '$145K based on Levels.fyi data' is stronger than 'I'd like more.'

If they can't move on base, ask for a signing bonus — it's a one-time cost and easier to approve.

Get everything in writing before you resign from your current role.

The worst that happens is they say 'this is our best offer.' They almost never rescind because you asked.

Practice your negotiation script out loud. Rehearsal reduces anxiety by 60%.

Frame it as a collaboration: 'I'd love to find a package that works for both of us.'

If the offer is already above your researched market rate, accept graciously. Don't negotiate for the sake of negotiating.
